Workplace Violence Prevention Begins With SETUP

Part II 3D Workplace Violence Prevention Toolkit – SETUP

When you open the box for a computer or entertainment system, you begin with a setup chart. The Active Shooter 360 Toolkit is similar; the SETUP template frames the initial development and implementation of your workplace violence prevention program. Remember that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) expects employers to have a written workplace violence prevention plan.  In other words, informal break room discussions about violence should morph into a plan and a comprehensive program. SETUP is where you start.

Key SETUP elements are as follows:

Assign Planning Team members – it takes a team with a leader and members with clearly specified responsibilities.

Identify Subject Matter Experts for advisory roles – tap internal resources such as HR, legal staff, Security, and Risk Management. Small organizations should consider consultants or advisors.

Set Milestones and Completion dates – maintain SETUP momentum by setting specific/measurable goals, and timelines.

Assign Action Items/Responsibilities – someone has to be responsible and accountable for deliverables established by the Planning Team.

Key Takeaway:

Avoid skimming through the SETUP and jumping into the TROUBLESHOOT and ACTION stuff. The Active Shooter 360 3D Workplace Violence Prevention program – like any other project – must start with a solid underpinning.
