You likely perceive active shooter training as being response focused; something happens that triggers action. Add a new perspective by making HR a key player before an active shooter tragedy. Here’s how:
- Create a formal culture where overt or veiled threats and behaviors are immediately addressed by HR.
- Ensure that employees can safely report observations or concerns without fear of retribution.
- “If you see something, say something,” is a useless slogan if HR doesn’t take action. Don’t dismiss a report by responding, “That’s just Ralph, you know how he is.”
- Iniate an annonomous Violence Tip Line where team members can verbally or electronically report threats or creepy behavior.
Remember that a common thread in many workplace violence and school active shooter attacks is the shooter made threats and exhibited suspicious behavior before carrying out an attack.
